Scarborough's Rope

Scarborough's Rope shows how the development of Language Comprehension and Word Recognition work together to develop a skilled reader.

Scarborough's Rope has two parts.

  • Language Comprehension which encompasses:
  1. Background knowledge
  2. Vocabulary
  3. Language Structure
  4. Verbal Reasoning
  5. Literacy Knowledge
  • Word Recognition which encompasses:

  • Phonemic awareness.
  • Phonics skills.
  • The ability to read words in text in an accurate and fluent manner.
  • The ability to apply comprehension strategies consciously and deliberately as they read.

Science of Reading

This means that there are deliberate ways to teach children how to read. The alphabetic principal is used to teach children phonological awareness. Students develop an othrographic mapping where words are readily available from explicit phonics practice, explicit vocabulary exposure and hearing others read to them aloud. Is is not easy for children to learn to read. It isn't natural, it is science.
